Popular sportswear manufacturer Nike is seemingly the latest big-name corporation preparing for the fast-approaching Metaverse era. The company is currently hiring virtual material designers and recently filed for different trademarks that convey its intention to sell branded virtual wear.
Nike is headed for Metaverse
In total, Nike has secured about seven trademark names, including “AIR JORDAN,” “JORDAN,” “NIKE,” and others, all of which are “intended to cover the categories of downloadable virtual goods,” reads the filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
While speaking on this, a trademark attorney, Josh Gerben, opined that the recently secured trademarks by Nike “would very clearly be a nod to this idea of the metaverse.” Gerben believes “Nike is protecting their trademarks for this new era.”
Besides the trademark application, Nike has also listed two new job openings on October 23 for “Virtual Material Designer.” The description of the job reads that the candidates will “play a key role in redefining our digital landscape, ushering us into the metaverse, and growing our team’s capabilities.”
Metaverse is upon us
Metaverse is another technological concept that has been gearing up lately, more especially since Facebook began venturing into it. This artificial reality is going to enable humans to interact with virtual objects – in the form of non-fungible tokens – in a digitally-enhanced environment.
The virtual world intertwines with NFTs, and it’s going to extend their applicability. Recently, social media giant Facebook announced it has rebranded to “Meta” to better reflect on its mission on building on Metaverse, which is yet to be fully realized. However, the industry is gradually gaining traction.
Lotte World Adventure, a South Korean amusement park, has already made headways in bringing this virtual world to the mass. The Korean government is also positive that this new industry will contribute immensely to the growth of the economy and market demand, Cryptopolitan reported.
